A large portion of the world’s plum exports are carried out from Turkey. On average, Turkey exports around 100,000 tons of plums annually. The majority of this export is in the form of fresh plums. Turkish plums are recognized in the global market for their quality, taste, and variety.
Plums are one of the delicious fruits of summer. With both sweet and sour varieties, they can be used in many different recipes. They are also rich in vitamins A, C, and K, fiber, and antioxidants.
In Turkey, plums are mainly grown in the Marmara, Aegean, and Mediterranean regions. Some varieties are also cultivated in Eastern Anatolia. Plums are an important product for production and trade, particularly in cities like Bursa and Izmir. The most common varieties grown in Turkey are red, yellow, white, and black plums.
We export three different types or varieties. These include Green Plum, Blackberry Plum, and Japanese Plum.
Green plum is mainly grown in Turkey’s Southeastern Anatolia Region, especially in provinces such as Malatya, Elazığ, Adıyaman, and Diyarbakır. The fruit is large, soft, and sweet. While it is mostly consumed fresh, it is also used in making jam, marmalade, sherbet, and dried fruit. Plums are high in vitamin C, potassium, and other antioxidants, making them essential for a healthy diet.
The Blackberry plum is a highly aromatic fruit that combines sweet and sour flavors. Usually grown in shrub form, this fruit is commonly used in pastries and jam production.
In Turkey, blackberry plums are generally cultivated in the Black Sea region, especially in provinces like Ordu, Giresun, and Trabzon. Some producers in the Marmara and Aegean regions also grow this variety.
The Japanese plum is a popular fruit known for its sweet and juicy texture, reddish-purple skin, and pleasant aroma. In Turkey, it is generally cultivated in the Black Sea region, where the climate and soil structure are ideal for production. Local farmers in the Black Sea region grow and market high-quality Japanese plums. They are especially preferred for fresh consumption and jam production. Additionally, Japanese plum exports are also carried out in Turkey.
